Services

The Kenai Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) offers the following Services:

Equipment Rental

The Kenai SWCD maintains an inventory of specialized agricultural equipment for rent to local producers, as well as those preparing their land for farming. See the Equipment Rental page for additional information.

Weed Free Gravel Certification

In 2014, the Kenai SWCD became the first District in the state to certify gravel pits producing weed-free gravel, primarily for use in road and construction projects within the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Trained inspectors visit participating gravel pits twice during the growing season to scout for weeds and provide advice on weed control, as needed. This is a fee-based program.  For more information about the State of Alaska’s Certified Weed-Free Gravel Program click here.  To request inspection on the Kenai Peninsula, contact the District office.

Weed Free Forage Certification

The Kenai SWCD offers free inspections to hay producers seeking Weed Free Forage certification. Using certified weed-free forage in dog yards, livestock operations, road-building and stream bank restoration projects where mulch is required is an effective way to prevent the spread of invasive plants along trails, roads and waterways.  For more information on getting certified, contact the District office.

For an explanation of why horse owners should use certified weed-free forage when they go on backcountry pack trips, see Refuge Notebook: Brush the Invaders Off Your Boots.
